What I Think of This Thing Called “Social Media”

Almost everyday when my wife gets home from a hard day at the office and a fight with the Dallas traffic, she enjoys unwinding by hanging out with her friends and family on Facebook, just to see what’s going on. You can’t help to notice the stress slowly diminishing from her face as she smiles and laughs in front of her computer. With a list of over a hundred “friends” she has accumulated over a relatively short period of time, people around seems to be asking those they meet nowadays “Are you on Facebook?” Do you Twitter?

What is this thing called “Social Media?” How did it come about? Because of such platforms like Facebook and Twitter just to name a few, people are enjoying interacting and are getting more and more sociable online.

Some of these platforms have an interesting history. Take Facebook for an example. The idea sort of came from an extension of an online dating service particularly for college students. Then the idea came up if couples could meet online, why not just people in general? Throw in a few games they can share together and boom now you have Facebook!

It’s similar with Twitter. When blogging quickly became the “big thing” that everyone was doing online, (so I heard), someone came up with the idea of sharing your thoughts, plans, activities, or anything you wanted to share, without having to write a complete blog. So then came the 140 characters “message box” and now millions of people are just “tweeting” away.

So what do I think of this thing call “Social Media?” Well I think it brings people as well as communities closer together and give them more things to talk about. Yes people are becoming more sociable over the net.

And now businesses are jumping in on the band wagon. Companies of all types are learning how to use these same platforms to reach potential customers. As anything else that’s new, comes the anxious task of learning how to use it effectively.

Hi. My name is Reginald Jackson. And I would love to help you with any tips I’ve learn in getting the most out of this thing called “Social Media.”
